엄마와 여동생과 함께 살고 있는 10대 소녀 홀리 해밀턴은 엄마 진이 매번 수준미달의 남자와 사귀다 사랑에 실패할 때마다 그 상처를 잊기 위해 다른 도시로 이사하기를 반복하면서 친구도 사귀지 못하는 것에 지쳐 있다. 한 곳에 정착해 평범하게 사는 것이 소원인 홀리는 새로 이사간 곳에서 새로이 친구를 사귀게 된다. 우연히 유명 레스토랑을 경영하는 친구의 멋진 삼촌인 벤을 알게 된 홀리는 그를 모델로 완벽한 남자(퍼펙트 맨)를 만들어내, 엄마에게 러브레터와 선물 등을 보내기 시작하는데...
